CO₂ tolerance

Practical comfort with rising respiratory drive and mild air hunger during controlled breathing.

Also known as: CO2 tolerance, Carbon dioxide tolerance

In breathwork, CO₂ tolerance describes how calmly someone can stay with rising urge-to-breathe signals while keeping the breath controlled and voluntary. Auralize uses a controlled-exhale assessment as its default product baseline for this training target.

CO₂ tolerance trains the buffer between breath urgency and reactive breathing, so stress spikes, breath pauses, long exhales, and athletic pacing are easier to stay coordinated through.

    The Auralize CO₂ Tolerance Test

Auralize measures one slow, controlled exhale after a guided warm-up. It is a proprietary respiratory-control baseline—not a blood-gas test or a BOLT breath hold.

    Air hunger

The subjective feeling of needing to breathe, driven primarily by CO₂ chemoreceptor activation.

    Chemoreceptors

Sensors that monitor blood chemistry to regulate breathing. Central chemoreceptors watch CO₂ and pH; peripheral ones watch oxygen.
