Chemoreceptors

Sensors that monitor blood chemistry to regulate breathing. Central chemoreceptors watch CO₂ and pH; peripheral ones watch oxygen.

Central chemoreceptors in the brainstem drive normal breath rhythm by responding to CO₂ and pH. Peripheral chemoreceptors in the carotid bodies respond to steep drops in oxygen. In everyday life, the urge to breathe is a CO₂ signal, not an oxygen one.
