How the inhale-exhale test actually works.
Six relaxed cycles, two taps per breath, under three minutes total. The only rule is not to perform.
Sit comfortably and let a short settling window pass without adjusting your breath. Start the sample as your next natural inhale begins, then keep breathing continuously — no intentional pauses, no stretching either side of the cycle.
Tap once as each exhale starts and once as each new inhale starts. Auralize timestamps the taps, derives each cycle's inhale and exhale length, and averages your inhale-to-exhale ratio across six complete cycles. Trying to engineer a "better" ratio only measures the performance instead of the baseline.

Common questions about the inhale-exhale ratio.
What is an inhale-to-exhale ratio?
It is the average length of your inhale divided by the average length of your exhale across complete breath cycles. A ratio of 1.0 means both sides are even; below 1.0 means your exhale runs longer; above 1.0 means your inhale runs longer. Auralize measures it across six relaxed cycles.
Should my exhale be longer than my inhale?
At rest, a slightly longer exhale is common, and deliberate long-exhale patterns are widely used for downshifting. But this test measures a snapshot of your natural timing, not a target to chase — Auralize explicitly treats no ratio as "better." What matters is knowing your pattern and choosing practice accordingly.
How does the inhale-exhale test work?

Do longer exhales actually calm the nervous system?
Exhalation is associated with the heart-rate-slowing side of respiratory sinus arrhythmia, which is why extended-exhale patterns are used for winding down. Why six breath cycles?
One breath is noise; six complete relaxed cycles give a small but usable sample of your natural timing while keeping the test under three minutes. As with every Auralize baseline, compare results only with your own history under similar conditions.
Is the test safe?
Yes for most people — there are no holds and no forced patterns; you breathe normally and tap along. Do not strain or stretch either side of the breath to engineer a ratio. Skip it if you are pregnant or managing a cardiovascular or respiratory condition without clearance from your clinician.
