Hyperventilation

Breathing in excess of metabolic need. Lowers blood CO₂, raises pH, and can produce tingling, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

Voluntary controlled hyperventilation is the active phase of power breathing. Involuntary hyperventilation is a hallmark of panic attacks. In panic, slowing the breath is the goal; in power breathing, the hyperventilation is intentional and followed by retention.
